Samenvatting

This article explores some prospects of research into the reception of foreign literature in nineteenth-century Holland and concentrates on an institutional approach of reception research. This approach directs the attention to cultural distribution channels through which literature from abroad has been imported and translated. There is a discussion of the ways in which Dutch translators worked in the service of journals and other periodicals, of the theatrical world and of the publishing trade. In this context, the 'translation urge' of the Dutch and their appreciation of translating come up for discussion, as well as nineteenth-century notions of originality and imitation, which complicate reception research.
