This article discusses the advantages and disadvantages of a recent digital edition of a seventeenth century Dutch poem. Important issues are the inclusion of multiple annotations by early commentators of the text and the authority and intellectual responsibility of the modern editor (or editors, for this edition is the result of a collaborative project with participants who remain partly anonymous). To what extent does an edition with so many interpretative layers and voices serve the reader?
