Samenvatting

This contribution is a review-article of the methodological postscript-volume with which the editors-in-chief of the recent ‘History of Dutch Literature’ (Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur) concluded the publication of their multi-authored and multi-volume project. A critical examination of the project’s foundational idea of the ‘functionalist approach’ is coupled, in this contribution, to a confrontation between the ‘nationalist’ profile of this literary history with current transnational attempts at literary history in neighboring countries and other linguistic regions.
