This paper focuses on the spatial and ethical dimension of the reading experience, which allows the reader to explore a textual world from within. This exploration of a fictional world also reveals the phantasmatical involvement of the reader, whose own existential space or ethos is reflected in the text. I examine the literary space of two novella’s, Maurice Gilliams’ Elias of het gevecht met de nachtegalen (1936) and Jeroen Brouwers’ Zonder trommels en trompetten (1973). The reading experience of both these novels is structured by the same spatial fantasy: the desire to cross boundaries and to escape one’s own actual existence.
