Stenen in het mozaïek. De vroegmoderne Nederlandse roman als internationaal fenomeen
Samenvatting
This article discusses the position of Dutch seventeenth-century prose fiction in European perspective. Internationally known novels like Amadis de Gaule, Argenis, Don Quijote and Lazarillo de Tormes were translated and adapted in the Dutch Republic too. But there were many more prose stories and many of them cannot be so easily characterized because of unknown correspondences between these texts. The same goes for Dutch novels that went abroad by way of translations into various languages. Digital methods must be used to detect possible transfers of poetical patterns and cultural values throughout Europe and to group the texts in relevant ways. For further analysis the concepts of poetic incoherence and social behaviour will be fruitful.
