‘Zulke literatuur is voor veel later komenden bestemd’. Piet Mondriaan als schrijver
Samenvatting
Piet Mondriaan is mainly known as an abstract painter and as a co-founder of modern art. This essay examines another manifestation of his various forms of art, one which has up until now barely been paid attention to: Mondriaan’s literary work. In the 1920s he wrote two short prosaic stories that he himself characterized as futuristic art. Within the sphere of academic research, his narrations are attributed within writing as more traditional forms of poetry. This article analyses this contradiction and infers that Mondriaan’s prose shows more avant-garde elements than current research alleges.
