Samenvatting

To what extent is it still possible to grant ethical meaning to a literary text that testifies to a secularisation of Western culture? This question can be raised in connection to a rewriting of the parable of the Prodigal Son (Lk. 15, 11- 32) in Frans Kellendonk’s (1951-1990) novel Mystiek lichaam. Een geschiedenis (1986). A comparative analysis of this excerpt points to a lack of confidence in language which, however, does not alter the possibility of drawing an ethics of perception of alterity.
