Limburgismen in het handschrift-Borgloon

Michiel de Vaan

Samenvatting

The Middle Dutch manuscript from Borgloon is written in a common variety of late fifteenth-century Central Southern Dutch. The manuscript also contains linguistic elements that are in all probability from Limburg, the area where Borgloon is situated. Most of the Limburgian elements occur in the songs and burlesque sermons at the end of the manuscript. This may be due to the nature of these genres: the oral transmission and public performance of such texts made them more liable to the influence of the local dialect.
